The Homecoming Tradition

By: Emily Zemlachenko

Homecoming is a week packed full of traditions at some schools! From parades, pep rallies, bonfires, alumni reunions and football, homecoming is like no other. Homecoming was invented in 1911 when the University of Missouri Athletic Director invited the alumni to “come home” for the Missouri vs. Kansas rivalry game, known as the Border War. Over 10,000 alumni attended Homecoming that year and took part in the festivities. Since then, Homecoming has spread throughout College and High School Athletics. It’s a time, usually in October, to welcome back the alumni and continue traditions that encompass each school.

Each school that participates in Homecoming hosts annual traditions that occur throughout Homecoming Week. Here are five ways to make your Homecoming Week the best one YET!

Pick a Theme!

Vote on a theme for Homecoming Week! This theme can be included in t-shirt designs, class themed dress up days, parade floats, etc.

Hold Class Competitions!

Each class decorates their hallway (or a parade float!) based on the Homecoming Theme.  A judging panel would rank the classes and the winning class could win something unique!

Parade Performances!

Partner up with the Student Council and plan a parade that occurs the week of Homecoming. Include the band, cheerleaders and dancers, along with the athletes and other community organizations.

Class floats can also be a part of the class competition, with permission from administration!

Bonfire and Pep Rally!

Host a bonfire and pep rally the night before the game! Have the football coach and players speak to get the student body excited for the game. The Spirit Squads and the band will be there to perform to set the tone for the night!

Invite the Alumni Back!

Most importantly, spread the word to the alumni and make them feel welcome COMING HOME!

Homecoming is a great way to kindle the school spirit and keep citizens involved in the community. UCA wants to see how your school celebrates! Use the hashtag #UCAGameDay on Twitter and Instagram at your Homecoming game, so you can share with us how awesome your school’s traditions are! Hope everyone has a great and successful Homecoming this year, leading to a game ending with a VICTORY!
