Turn the Tables at Tryouts

Ah, tryouts! It’s that time of year when a cheerleader’s hopes and dreams rest on the quick decisions made by a few judges, or possibly just one coach. Before you put yourself out there to be judged, turn the tables and check out the cheer program you plan to join. You might fi nd that they aren’t all the same, and not all are best for you.

Here are some things to consider:

Does the coach or gym owner act in a professional manner? Does he or she take cheerleading seriously? Talk to other cheerleaders or parents and find out how disciplinary issues are handled, or if they are handled at all. Does the coach carry any credentials from organizations like AACCA, USASF, NFHS or NCSSE? While no course or credentials can prove someone is a good coach, they do demonstrate that this person took the initiative to further their professional development.

What are the expectations of the cheerleaders? Are they made clear at the beginning of the selection process? Coaches who provide clear expectations are more likely to demand professional behavior, and you can usually expect that this coach runs a tight ship.

Is the registration process simple and straightforward? Or is it difficult to get information? Communication is vital to having a successful season. If deadlines are not adhered to, or dates and locations are changed at the last minute, you can probably expect more of the same during the season.

Finally, what safety programming is in place during the tryout? Are there mats available? Is the coach allowing participants to try stunts or tumbling skills without proper supervision or without proper spotting? Does the coach appear to push people beyond their skill level, or does she make an effort to teach correct technique? Is there an emergency plan in place for tryouts? Failure to provide appropriate supervision during tryouts does not bode well for the remainder of the year.

Joining a cheer team is a serious commitment and it should not be taken lightly. You’ll be spending a good part of the next year with this coach and these teammates. You should evaluate how the program fits into your life and whether it would be beneficial for you to join, just as they are determining whether you’ll be an asset to their squad. Choose wisely!
